1. The Immense Importance of the Heart

The heart is the man. It is the seat of all spiritual life, and health, and strength, and growth.

Proverbs 4:23 "Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life."

Do not tell me what a man is, let me see his heart.

Pr 23:7 "For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he"

The heart is the place which God looks to know the condition of a person

1Sa 16:7 "But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart."

Men kid themselves because they do not ponder their hearts.

Pr 21:2 "Every way of a man is right in his own eyes: but the LORD pondereth the hearts."

The Lord is the great Judge.  He is so because of wisdom and He also knows where to look at man to see man's true condition.

Jer 17:10 "I the LORD search the heart, I try the reins, even to give every man according to his ways, and according to the fruit of his doings."

God knows that there is no movement in man lest he first give his heart.

Pr 23:26 "My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways."

We may give God a bowed head and a serious face, our bodily presence in His house, and a loud Amen. But until we give God our heart, we give Him nothing at all.

Mt 15:8 "This people draweth nigh unto me with their mouth, and honoureth me with their lips; but their heart is far from me."
Mt 15.9 "But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men."

The zeal of Jehu against idolatry was very great, and his services in pulling down idols brought him many temporal rewards. But there was one great blot on his character which spoiled all. He did not walk in the law of God.

2Ki 10:31 "But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart: for he departed not from the sins of Jeroboam, which made Israel to sin."

2. The Heart that Is Wrong

The wrong heart is the natural heart with which we are all born. There are no hearts which are right by nature.

Jer 17:9 "The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?"

Ge 6:5 "And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually."

Mr 7:21 "For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,"
Mr 7.22 "Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: "
Mr 7.23 "All these evil things come from within, and defile the man."

Stony Heart

Eze 11:19 "And I will give them one heart, and I will put a new spirit within you; and I will take the stony heart out of their flesh, and will give them an heart of flesh:"

A stony heart is hard - no bending, no yielding
A stony heart is cold - no feeling, no warmth
A stony heart is barren - no life, dead inert
A stony heart is dead - no hearing, seeing, moving, growing

The Stony Heart thusly is unchanged.

3. The Heart that is Right

New Heart - new in every way and objects to every old way.

Eze 36:26 "A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh."

2Co 5:17 "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."

Broken and Contrite Heart - broke to the former life, alive to the new.

Ps 51:17 "The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise."

Praying Heart - Seeking the face of God and His will for its life.

Ro 8:15 "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."

Ps 27:8 "When thou saidst, Seek ye my face; my heart said unto thee, Thy face, LORD, will I seek."

Purified Heart - shirking the filth and sinfulness of the world.

Mt 5:8 "Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God."

Single Sighted Heart -

Jas 4:8 "Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded."

Lu 11:34 "The light of the body is the eye: therefore when thine eye is single, thy whole body also is full of light; but when thine eye is evil, thy body also is full of darkness."

What is the condition of your heart?

"What is your heart? Is your heart right or wrong? Is it a really good heart?"

1Jo 3:21 "Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God."

Inquire what your tastes are,—where your affections are placed,—where your treasure is,—what you hate most,—what you love most,—what pleases you most,—what grieves you most.

Mt 6:21 "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also."
