Parable of the Sower

Some are saved,
but fall away

Mat 13:23 "But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."

Mat 13:23 "But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it…"

Sea Side

Mat 13:1 "The same day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side."
Mat 13:2 "And great multitudes were gathered together unto him, so that he went into a ship, and sat; and the whole multitude stood on the shore."

The people gathered around the Lord
so that He might even be pushed into the water.

He probably did wade into the water
over to a nearby boat and preached to the people on the shore.

There is always going to be some
that are on the shore, that want to hear the truth.

preached the truth.
insisted on the truth
is the Way , the Truth and the Life.

Mat 13:3 "And he spake many things unto them in parables, saying, Behold, a sower went forth to sow;"

Watch it now, Jesus is saying, I am going to tell you something
Heads Up
Watch it
Be alert
Stay on your toes

A Sower went forth to Sow
This is a farmer broadcasting his seed.
He has prepared the ground.
He has bought the seed.
He has come out to scatter the seed.

Then he will cover the seed
with the right amount of soil and hopefully the rainwater will arrive on time.

Wayside (Packed) Ground

Mat 13:4 "And when he sowed, some seeds fell by the way side, and the fowls came and devoured them up:"

Some of seed that the farmer sowed
fell on the Way Side.
This is the walking path along the way and with much traffic has become packed and the seed cannot penetrate the soil.

Illustration my wife's Grandfather
came out one time to help her get a garden started.
He told her to plant where there has not been any animals tramping around, even during the season when nothing is growing in the Garden.
He told me once that when he turned his land over for planting and rowed the field that he could take his bare hand and run it into the row, sometimes up to his elbow.
I pointed out this was sandy soil, we were going to plow the ground.
He said that this would still not loosen the soil enough, for the best results.

The Sower threw the seed and some of it landed on Packed Ground.
It had been tramped down
by the lies of men.
by the imaginations of philosophers.
by bitterness of the guilty.
by hatefulness of the unloving.
by unchecked anger of the wrathful.
by disgust of the discontent.
by rebellion of the ones who always know-better.
by a lifetime of bad experiences.

Then what happened?
The birds of the field that do not sow for themselves, that do not harvest their own crops, came and ate the seed right off the top of the Ground.

Packed land is barren,
so is a packed heart.

Stony Ground

Mat 13:5 "Some fell upon stony places, where they had not much earth: and forthwith they sprung up, because they had no deepness of earth:"
Mat 13:6 "And when the sun was up, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away."

Some of the seed
that the farmer broadcast out fell on rocky ground.
Rocks themselves are hard and very dense, the only moisture is in between them and if there is no soil in between the rocks, when the sun shines down a few days, everything dries out quickly.
Then the seed which took root quickly withers away not having root in good ground.

Thorny Ground

Mat 13:7 "And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprung up, and choked them:"

Some of the seeds the farmer planted
fell in to where the weeds and briars and thorns are.
There was good ground there, but the Thorns choked out the crop.
The vines of the weeds choked out the crop as it began to spring up.

Good Ground

Mat 13:8 "But other fell into good ground, and brought forth fruit, some an hundredfold, some sixtyfold, some thirtyfold."
Mat 13:9 "Who hath ears to hear, let him hear."

Now at last the Farmer planted some seed
in Good Ground and he made a harvest.
Not all the harvest was the same, because even in Good Ground, there is good, better and best places to plant.

Around the Church is a field with an average soil depth of about 1 foot.
In some places it is a little deeper and in other places it is a little less.
It is very easy to see where each of these places are by watching the crop come up.
In the places where the soil is deepest the crop does better.
In the places where the soil is only a few inches the crop does worse.

The disciples ask Jesus about this parable
and He explains a few things and then in verse 18 makes the parable clear to them

Mat 13:18 "Hear ye therefore the parable of the sower."

Jesus didn't say, "Behold", this time
He said, "Hear Ye".

Don't just watch carefully
but listen even more carefully.

And like we have found on Sunday Night
in our study of the Book of James, "Listen!"
But Believe as well.
And even go beyond Believe, to actual Trust!!!

Faith without Works is Dead

Wayside & the devil

Mat 13:19 "When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, then cometh the wicked one, and catcheth away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side."

Look at that word, "Understandeth"
a lot hinges on that word.
We are tempted to get the dictionary out and see what that word means, because if we hear the Word of the Kingdom and don't understand it the devil is able to snatch away the Word of the Kingdom from us.
The meaning of that word
and many others is not in its definition but in its usage.

obviously has to do with comprehension, but there must be something else involved, because lack of comprehension is not always our fault.
And this passage definitely shows the receiver of the seed on the Way Side is at fault.

Now we are beginning to see
how this works.
There has to be understanding to a very basic extent.

the seed is the Word of the Kingdom, the Word of God.

Acts 16:31 "And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house."

Believe to be saved.

Acts 2:38 "Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost."

This is were understanding comes in.
This verse does not mean that a person has to be Baptized to be Saved or else Acts 16.31 would be in error.

Acts 2.38 simply says something like this…
Repent, in the name of Jesus Christ, for the remission or forgiveness of sins and receive the Gift of the Holy Ghost.

It says be Baptized
but we know that Baptism has nothing to do with receiving the Holy Ghost because of Acts 10.45.

Acts 10:44 "While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word."
Acts 10:45 "And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost."
Acts 10:46 "For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,"
Acts 10:47 "Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?"
Acts 10:48 "And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days."

We can easily see
that they were Baptized after receiving the Holy Ghost.
So Baptism has nothing to do with being Saved.

Don't let the Word fall on Packed Ground
The devil will come along and snatch away the seed.
Receive the Word on loose ground.
Ground that can absorb the Word with understanding.

Acts 4:12 "Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved."

One thing for certain about the Word that is sown
It is unchanging.
There is no salvation outside of Jesus Christ.
There is salvation outside of the Baptist Church, but not outside of Jesus.
There is hardly a witness outside of the Baptist Church, that preaches Eternal Life.

I run across people all the time
that say they are saved.
And when I ask if they are 100% certain they are going to heaven, then they get a little doubtful, but some are sure.
Then I will ask them if their preacher believes in 100% assurance.
Some will tell me yes.
Then I will ask them, have you heard him preach it from the pulpit, almost all, not all, but almost, will say they have never heard him say it, but they are sure he believes it.

There is something wrong
when a preacher will not preach what he believes.
Sounds a little like a Respecter of Persons.
Sounds a little like a Tickler of Ears.
Sounds a little like "I don't want to lose any of my Tithers"
Sounds a little like a "Preacher of Smooth Things"

Well the Lord never cared for all of that,
He is the One
that called the Religious Pharisees, Hypocrites,
that run the money changers out of the Temple,
that warned people of the Leaven of the Scribes
that rebuked the Priests for their parading around in their robes

He was more interested …
in casting out the devils
in curing the sick
in raising the dead
in preaching the Gospel to the poor

Stony Places & Rootlessness

Mat 13:20 "But he that received the seed into stony places, the same is he that heareth the word, and anon with joy receiveth it;"
Mat 13:21 "Yet hath he not root in himself, but dureth for a while: for when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, by and by he is offended."

The Person on the Stony Ground
hears the Word of God and anon or at once with Joy receives that Word, which he heard.
And is saved.
He is on his way to Heaven.
He is under the blood of Christ.
He is now a son of the Father.
He has Eternal Life.

John 3:36 "He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."

Does not say anything about what kind of Ground
If he believes, he is saved.
If he does not believe, he is not saved.

The Person on the Stony Ground
Hears the Word of God.
He receives the Word of God.
He endures for a while, but when Tribulation or the Pressures of life mount up, because of his stand on the Word, he caves in.

When he is Persecuted
or is Pursued by those with Evil Intent, because of his stand in the Word, he wilts.

You know what I mean
when someone slams a door in your face
when someone calls you a Holy Joe or Preacher.

Thorns & Cares of the World

Mat 13:22 "He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful."

This is the person I feel sorry for
They have heard the Word and have received the Word.

But, the cares for this world get to him.
He wants the respect of the Backsliden and Lost.
He wants the prestige of accomplishment.
He wants the titles that others have.
He wants the admiration of those he works with.
He wants the recognition of his hard work.
He wants the approval of man first, then God's approval.

All of these will choke the Word out of your life.
But never the less…

John 5:24 "Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life."

The one that hears the Word of God and receives it,
has Everlasting Life.
Choked, but saved.
Useless, but saved.

But look at the rest of the verse …

Mat 13:22 "He also that received seed among the thorns is he that heareth the word; and the care of this world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful."

The Deceitfulness of Riches
is a ruiner of Christian Lives.
Nothing wrong with having money.
Nothing wrong with making money.
Nothing wrong with spending money.
Nothing wrong with giving away money.

But, if you are not careful
money will deceive you.
It will trick you into thinking, that the gathering of money was not for you It will trip you up and convince you that you will be a bigger tither.

How many times have I heard
"I don't buy Lotto Tickets just for me, I have promised God that if I win I will give him all the way from 10% to 90%," depending of course on how much they win.

Don't look now,
but those Lotto Tickets in your wallet have vines growing off them and they are slowly growing out of your pocket and up your back and before long you will have them wrapped around your neck. They will not kill you, but they will choke the Lord out of your life.

How many times have I heard,
"I have to work towards getting ahead"
"I have a family to care for, and then they will quote the Bible to me…

1 Tim 5:8 "But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel."

Nothing wrong with
providing for your family caring for everyone's needs, but riches are deceitful.
They will make us say one thing and have us do something else.
And during the process of time we will be gasping for spiritual breath.

The Lord doesn't go around choking people
He releases people…
He released the Adulterous Woman from her captors
He released the evil spirit from the man at Gadera
He released the widow's son from the funeral bier
He released Thomas from his doubting
He released Paul from his sins.

Good Ground & Receiving the Word

Mat 13:23 "But he that received seed into the good ground is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; which also beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some an hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty."

Now we come to the fellow
who hears the word
and receives the word
and believes the word
and uses the word to bring forth a harvest.

Not many of these guys around

Mat 9:36 "But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd."
Mat 9:37 "Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;"

Not many of these fellows
who are willing to listen
and receive
and gather the harvest of 30, 60 and 100 fold

Mat 9:38 "Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest."

Pray that God will use you
as fertile ground to bring forth a harvest.

1 Cor 3:6 "I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase."
1 Cor 3:7 "So then neither is he that planteth any thing, neither he that watereth; but God that giveth the increase."
1 Cor 3:8 "Now he that planteth and he that watereth are one: and every man shall receive his own reward according to his own labour."

Some will labor
for themselves
for a few
for 30 fold
for 60 fold
for 100 fold

Some will labor
with soil that is packed and the devil will take their seed.

Some will labor
with soil that is rocky and the roots will not go down and they will wilt.

Some will labor
with soil that is in the weeds and they will be choked out.

Some will labor
with soil that is fertile and they will have a harvest.

Some will labor
in the Lazy Boy
in the Fishing Hole
in the woods over a salt block

But the Lord labors
in the field of men
in the pond of women
in the easy chair of the sick

Bringing Men, Women and Children to the Saviour

John 11:25 "Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:"
John 11:26 "And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"
